چکیده

A preliminary s~rvey was conducted to provide an esti~ate of the seventy of red rot (Glomerella tucumanensis) I~ vanous parts of the sugar industry. The incidence of this dIsea~e was greater in the higher altitude areas, with long growing cycles, and where crops were damaged by sesamia or eldana borers. The most severe case observed was 52% of stalks of NC0376 infected in a field at Kranskop. Survey d~ta demonstrated differences in the susceptibility of varietiessimilar to those observed with mechanical inoculation.

Current Status of Research on Sugarcane Yellow Leaf Syndrome in Southern Africa

In the 1960s, yellowing symptoms in sugarcane were seen throughout East Africa. This was called ‘yellow-wilt’, a condition first described in Tanzania in 1962. The symptoms appear identical to those of Yellow Leaf Syndrome (YLS). In South Africa symptoms of YLS were first observed in 1994 and were conspicuous in varieties CP66/1043, N22 and N26, intermediate in N27 and less conspicuous in NCo37...

Crop Growth Models for Decision Support in the South African Sugarcane Industry

The objectives of this paper are to present progress in crop growth modelling for decision support in the South African sugarcane industry, and to discuss possible directions towards better exploitation of the tools developed at SASRI. It is shown that their dynamic nature and process orientation make simulation models particularly useful as a basis for decision support systems (DSS) in crop ma...

Conventional Sugarcane Breeding in South Africa: Progress and Future Prospects

Initial sugarcane production in South Africa relied on imported varieties. When imported varieties succumbed to diseases, the industry established the South African Research Institute (SASRI) with the mandate to develop sugarcane varieties. The popular and highly successful varieties, NCo310 and NCo376 were selected from crosses imported from India. NCo310 and NCo376 were grown successfully in ...

Patterns of Damage from Eldana Saccharina (lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in the South African Sugar Industry

In the South African sugar industry, internal tissue of sugarcane stalks attacked by Eldana saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) often turns a red colour as a result of secondary infection by various organisms. In the factory, less sugar is extracted from these sections because sucrose is inverted to glucose. The length of stalk that is red thus provides an indication of the amount of sug...
